Jimmy Riccitello, Chef-Kampfrichter der World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) sieht in einem Mailing für die Events in den USA mit den Highlights Ford IRONMAN Hawaii Triathlon World Championships in Kailua Kona (Oktober, Hawaii) und den IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon World Championships Clearwater (November, Florida) einschneidende Änderungen vor. Das Tragen von Strümpfen, Gamaschen der bekannten Hersteller CEP, Skins, 2XU, X-Socks, Nike, Craft, Louis Garneau, Falke, etc. wird damit indirekt unterbunden:
"IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races is mandatory and marking an athlete’s age group on the calf is part of that process. Athletes competing in our events rely on age group markings on calves to identify their competition. IRONMAN has been receiving an increasing number of complaints that compression socks and calf guards hide age group identification. At Hawaii 70.3 in June, IRONMAN experimented with eliminating age group calf markings on all athletes. This attempt at resolving the issue was met by even more complaints by the athletes. Therefore, beginning with the 2009 Ford IRONMAN World Championship, garments that cover age group calf markings will not be permitted. IRONMAN’s goal is to design (and my job is to enforce) rules that provide the most level playing field possible."
Das Kona-Blog hat bereits im Oktober 2008 den Trend vorweggenommen. Begründet wird das indirekte Verbot durch das "Bodymarking". Beim Anbringen der Startnummer und Altersklassenkennzeichnungen auf Armen und Waden ist sicherzustellen, dass die Kennzeichnungen sichtbar bleiben. Eine aus ästhetischen Gründen ebenfalls nachvollziehbare Entscheidung.
Solange die Industrie keine transparenten Stoffe verwenden oder Sichtfenster einbauen, müssen sich die Kompressionshersteller auf Unterarm-Armlinge, Tops und Hosen konzentrieren. Kompressionsstrümpfe werden somit wieder dem Reiseverkehr, dem Status eines Regenerationsmittels und dem Läuferlager zugeführt.
Der Innovationsmotor "Triathlon" wird nach Aerohelm, Aerolenker, Aerotrinksystemen, Chloropren-Schwimmanzügen (Speedsuits), uvm. neue Trends entwickeln, die dann andere Sportarten inspirieren. Gefährlich könnte allerdings die Entscheidung der FINA bezüglich der Speeduits mittelfristig auch dem schwimmenden Triathleten werden. Auch hier werden seit Einführung durch den neuseeländischen Hersteller Blue Seventy kritische Stimmen mit Forderungen nach "back to the roots" lauter...
